As London prepares to celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, the city’s Chinatown is buzzing with anticipation. Final preparations are underway for the festival’s headline performances, and this year’s spotlight falls on one of the city’s most active and engaging Chinese dance artists—Xusheng Yue.
We had the opportunity to interview Xusheng Yue as he rehearsed for his upcoming performance, and his passion for dance is evident from the very first moment. “Dance has always been a core part of my life,” he says, smiling. “Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by the way movement and music can tell a story.”
Xusheng attended university in Inner Mongolia, where he majored in Early Childhood Education with a strong focus on dance as his specialty. During his studies, dance was always his primary artistic pursuit, and he consistently excelled in all dance-related coursework. He often served as the lead dancer in performances across the Inner Mongolia region, building both technical strength and stage confidence.
Xusheng’s journey brought him to the UK in 2020, where he quickly became an active member of London’s vibrant arts community. Over the past few years, he has not only continued his training in traditional Chinese dance, but has also embraced new styles, particularly modern and Hip Hop dance. “London is such a diverse and inspiring place for dancers,” Xusheng shares. “I have the chance to learn from so many talented artists here, and I’m constantly challenged to grow and experiment with different styles.”
His artistic curiosity and open-minded approach have led to collaborations with several UK-based arts organisations. Xusheng is known for his energetic stage presence and willingness to bridge the gap between different dance genres and cultural traditions.
For the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, Xusheng will perform a Hip Hop piece—an exciting new direction that has already received unanimous support from the festival’s organising committee, the London Chinatown Chinese Association. According to the committee, “Xusheng brings a fresh and vibrant energy to our festival. His ability to blend traditional technique with contemporary expression is exactly what makes London’s Chinatown events so unique. We are thrilled to present his performance to the audience this year.”
As the festival draws closer, Xusheng continues to rehearse with focus and enthusiasm. “Every performance is a new chance to connect with the audience and share something meaningful,” he says. “I hope my dancing can bring joy, inspiration, and maybe even a new perspective to everyone who comes to the festival.”
The London Mid-Autumn Festival promises to be a true celebration of community, culture, and creativity. With artists like Xusheng Yue on stage, this year’s event is set to deliver unforgettable moments and showcase the best of the city’s diverse artistic talent.
